CARLETTO

Premium wheat (BQG appr. 8) - bearded wheat

The home-grown variety CARLETTO was registered as quality wheat in Hungary in 2020. The variety was also in the range of the Austrian approval test for three years and would have been included in the variety list as premium wheat of baking quality group 8 (German type “E”). CARLETTO, an extremely early-ripening awned wheat, is a variety for specialists in fitting locations with at least average quality and correspondingly good preceeding crops. For example, a loyal and reliable seed multiplication farm in Mannsdorf (region Marchfeld, south-east of Vienna) harvested 9 tonnes/ha (potatoes as preceeding crops) in 2022, which was more than significantly above the average in the region. Nevertheless, the variety cannot be recommended without reservation, as CARLETTO repeatedly reacts to extreme drought stress with reduced yields in weak locations. CARLETTO is short-growing (lodging APS 2), matures very early (like MANDARIN) and exceptionally stable (APS 2). CARLETTO shows its tolerance towards to mildew and rust diseases, but is less tolerant to Septoria tritici, DTR and ear fusarium, not least because of its short growth. With appropriate crop management, however, this is not a problem. In terms of quality, however, CARLETTO is a safe bet. In addition to very high protein and gluten values, the dough rheological characteristics are also right. The variety shows very high water absorption, very good dough stability, the best alveogram values and extremely high dough energy. In terms of baking quality, CARLETTO is absolutely comparable to ARNOLD. We therefore recommend CARLETTO exclusively for good soils. Compared to standard varieties in quality wheat cultivation, the sowing density should be increased significantly to 360 to 400 kernel/m², which corresponds to 170 to 200 kg/ha depending on the thousand kernel weight. Probstdorfer Saatzucht sees CARLETTO as a high-quality niche for quality and premium wheat production in Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and Italy.
