Winter field bean
With a total field bean acreage of approximately 5,800 hectares in Austria, 2,200 hectares are now being cultivated as the winter variety, which offers more stable yields, and this figure is on the rise. Planting in the fall makes optimal use of winter moisture, and flowering is already complete before the very frequent heat waves in June. The mid-early maturing AUGUSTA variety offers excellent yields, above-average lodging resistance, and good tolerance to bean rust. The potential occurrence of parasitic pathogens such as chocolate spot (Botrytis) and leaf spot (Ascochyta)—as well as aphid control to prevent viruses—must be taken into account during crop management. The optimal planting time for AUGUSTA in most growing regions is from the second half of October through early November. We recommend a seeding rate of 25 to a maximum of 30 seeds per square meter. This year, for the first time, high-quality AUGUSTA seed is available in larger quantities in both conventional and organic seed grades.
