BALKAN

Winter pea

Due to climate change, a new trend towards winter forms can be identified, not only in many types of cereal, but also in pea. On the one hand, the crop is able to use more of the winter moisture. On the other hand, the population should be more tolerant of pest infections (e.g. aphids, etc.) because of its increased vitality as a reaction to stress. BALKAN is the first winter pea offered by Probstdorfer Saatzucht. BALKAN is very hardy and has yellow grains. When compared to previously cultivated varieties, BALKAN begins to flower slightly later (medium-late classification) but it matures rather early. Moreover, BALKAN has decent mildew and foot disease tolerance, has medium growth and shows excellent stability. Cultivation should take place at the beginning of October, which is similar to winter barley. The recommended sowing strength ranges from 70 grains/m2 on good, profound soils, up to 120 grains/m2 on weaker soils.
